All Mendelssohn

Sergiu Schwartz, Violin

No composer was ever better named than Felix Mendelssohn, for Felix in its Latin roots means happy or fortunate. His music was appreciated from the beginning, and he never knew obscurity, facts that bring much joy into is music. Now a century and a half later, that bliss survives in high-spirited music. Even in minor keys, Mendelssohn is never thoroughly sorrowful, and his music can be counted on to provide an evening of delight.

Music: The Invisible Art

Lee Johnson, composer

With our season theme of “Classical Sounds from Near and Far” in mind, this concert is right on target with works from three different lands each offering a different idea of how music should sound. A majestic German voice, a flowing Korean voice, and a colorful American voice share space on this program, with the American composer being LaGrange’s own Lee Johnson. It is a kaleidoscope of fine music from around the world.

Concertgoers are asked to bring non-perishable food to support the fourth annual LaGrange Symphony Orchestra food drive benefiting the LaGrange Interfaith Food Closet. Food will be collected in the Callaway Auditorium lobby prior to the performance.

Classical Gems

Staci Culbreth, clarinet

Likely everyone reading this brochure cares about classical music, but during this performance, we’ll find out what ‘classical’ really means, for scholars of the field will tell you that ‘classical music’ is specifically that of the late 1700s and early 1800s, when Mozart, Beethoven, and Louis Spohr were at work. In the strictly classical realm, music was expected to be orderly and make sense, a fact that supports its popularity two centuries later.

Joys of Spring

Matthew Allen, cello, 2008 YAC Winner

Spring is a time for high spirits, youth and rebirth. Such is the mood of the works in this concert. From Viennese waltz- and polka-rhythms, to joyous Russian hymn tunes, to buoyant themes of a great composer’s early career, we find music sure to put a smile on listeners’ faces. Festivities inspired this music; let them inspire you as well, through melodies that almost sing with optimism.
